Combustion & Industrial Burner Research & Development

Bloom Engineering has gained a worldwide reputation for quality industrial burner and combustion products, supported by first-class engineering and application expertise. The heart of this knowledge base has always been research and development from the renowned Bloom Engineering Laboratory. This research and development facility, located at our corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh continues to provide leading edge combustion and burner product technology, as well as serving as the ideal training ground for our engineering staff.

History

Fred S. Bloom founded his company in 1934 with the belief that there was a dire need for improved industrial combustion products. His immediate areas of concern were safety, efficiency and production capabilities. From the early days, Mr. Bloom led the way in product technology, as well as quantitative furnace analysis techniques. Bloom Engineering research and development personnel have been granted more than 65 US Patents for advances in combustion and furnace technology. Several new patent applications are currently pending in the field of Ultra Low NOx combustion.

Research & Development Commitment

Bloom’s Research and Development strategy is one of continual product development and improvement. We recognize the critical importance of maintaining a leading-edge product line, in response to the market demands for reliable, fuel-efficient low emission combustion and control equipment. There is no doubt that the level of Research and Development commitment today determines the successful companies of tomorrow.

Bloom remains committed to the development and supply of rugged, reliable, practical products. Over the years, we have seen time and again the results of competing equipment that did not meet these fundamental criteria, which invariably results in an unsatisfactory installation. Before we will take a product idea to market, we demand that it be proven in our laboratory. Furthermore, we take the time to analyze whether a new idea will be practical in the plant environment. These guiding principles have allowed us to maintain a leadership role in the markets we serve.

Research & Development Facilities

The main laboratory at Bloom-Pittsburgh is equipped with over 20 furnaces which are used for fundamental combustion and heat-transfer research, product development and improvement, and customer demonstrations. Equipment available to the testing engineers includes:

  • Chemiluminescent NOx Analyzers
  • Paramagnetic and fuel-cell type oxygen analyzers
  • NDIR type Analyzers for Carbon Monoxide
  • VOC/Hydrocarbon analyzer
  • Portable multi-component flue gas analyzers
  • Acoustic analyzers including Octave-band and waveform sampling
  • Particulate sampling and other specific emission detection equipment
  • Gas blending and fuel oil supplies to allow development of products for a wide range of fuels
  • Specialized control equipment for development/proof-of-concept firing strategies
  • FLUENT CFD modeling on multiprocessor workstation
  • KaWeld test facilities for product development and refractory quality control
  • PC-based distributed process control/data acquisition system for real-time analysis, trending and datalogging

In addition, our Dusseldorf-Germany facility operates a laboratory dedicated to customer demonstrations and specialized product development.

Personnel

At Bloom Engineering, we recognize that research and development facilities alone do not assure innovative, high-quality, ‘real-world’ burner and combustion products. Our dedicated staff of degreed Development engineers and skilled technicians provides the talent necessary to achieve results. Entry-level engineers are given the training, guidance and opportunities to advance as their experience level grows. Direction of these efforts involves an experienced management team with many years of hands-on application expertise.
